Sun yang's supporter confusiousists constantly threaten harassing Mack Horton's family for 4years

Mack poked the dragon and parents paid price
Gangs outside the home, constant threats, their business hacked... four years after swimmer Mack Horton outed a Chinese rival as a drug cheat, his family still pays the price.

(from 悉尼奶爸)

On a mild October day last year Cheryl Horton was cleaning the backyard pool at the family home – a chore she rigorously avoids until it can be ignored no longer – when the vacuum head made a curious grinding sound. She raised the appliance, felt beneath it, and winced with pain. Blood coursed down her hand, dripping into the pale water. She called to her husband, Andrew, and together they discovered a “bucketload” of broken glass on the floor of the pool. She holds one of these centimetre-thick glass chunks, glinting like a rough-cut diamond, as she speaks. “We keep it on the desk in the study,” she says, “as a reminder of how bad things got.”

The couple knew immediately where the broken glass had come from, and why it was there. Just three months earlier their son, Olympic 400m freestyle gold medallist Mack Horton, had refused to join Chinese swimmer Sun Yang, a three-time Olympic gold medallist and 11-time world champion, on the medal podium at the World Championships in the South Korean city of Gwangju. Horton had just won silver in the 400m freestyle; Sun Yang gold. Mack Horton’s mute protest – standing up for clean sport by refusing to stand beside Sun – unleashed a wave of hostility more disturbing than anything the family had ever experienced. And since their son famously labelled Sun a drug cheat at the 2016 Rio Olympics, they’ve experienced a lot. “We’ve had so many death threats that we’ve stopped taking them seriously,” says Andrew with a grim chuckle.

At the Rio Olympics, before competition had even begun, Horton says Sun tried to provoke him in a warm-up pool by splashing water and hurling abuse as they both paused at the ends of their lanes. Asked by a reporter afterwards about the contretemps, Mack coolly replied that Sun had “splashed me to say hello, and I didn’t respond because I don’t have time for drug cheats”.
“That was the moment our lives changed,” says Andrew. “That’s when it all started.”

Mack’s remark in Rio, a reference to a three-month suspension his Chinese rival had served in 2014 for taking a banned stimulant, detonated across all forms of media – print, television and internet – with the force of a depth charge. Within 45 minutes, some 680,000 slurs, insults and death threats had assailed Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and the Chinese social media platform Weibo. His Wikipedia entry was later trolled. Mack was dog shit, a racist, destined for the Paralympics, and perhaps a nuclear bomb strike. He must apologise. Or else.
A week later, with Mack and his parents still in Rio, there was a break-in at the family home in the blue-chip Melbourne suburb of Glen Iris. Andrew’s business – he runs an educational technology company – also began to experience relentless cyber attacks that could only be mitigated, he says, by denying access from China.

After Mack’s theatrical and somewhat passive-aggressive follow-up protest in South Korea last year, “the hate”, as the family calls it, rose to another level of intensity. Dog turds were hurled at the family home; their trees and plants were poisoned. A passing parade of youths gathered at the back fence to chant slogans while banging pots and pans in the dead of night, or stood in the driveway hurling abuse. Someone who spoke broken English took to phoning Andrew every second day to detail what he would like to do to his daughter (he has no daughter). And there was the broken glass in the family pool.

“The biggest change was the intensity,” says Andrew. “It was unrelenting. Every day and night in the second half of 2019, peaking in September, easing off in February this year.” It relented in the same month that Sun received an eight-year suspension for destroying a blood sample in an out-of-competition doping test.

Horton, who has regular and ongoing security briefings about threats to his family, has been informed that his assailants call themselves “Confucianists”. The 5th century BC Chinese philosopher has been revived in recent years as a national icon by a Chinese Communist Party seeking ethical moorings outside its founding credo of Maoism, and his name has become a codeword for Chinese nationalism. Sun himself seemed to invite a nationalist interpretation of Horton’s comments in Rio, saying: “Disrespecting me was OK, but disrespecting China was unfortunate.”

Andrew harbours no ill-will towards Sun’s supporters, believing on the advice of security officials that they are acting under instructions from the Chinese Communist Party, either directly or indirectly, and “have little choice”. He is concerned, in fact, that some of them will be “beaten up, or worse, if they don’t comply”. He declines, on security grounds, to specify the assistance given to his family by police and security agencies; he’ll only say that he is “very grateful”. The fenced-in suburban family home is by social convention a kingdom, but for the Hortons it is a kingdom under siege.

The family’s challenges are part of a broader pattern of harassment and intimidation of the Chinese Communist Party’s critics and dissenters. Says a national security analyst who keeps a close eye on the case, and spoke on condition of anonymity: “The Hortons’ story is very disturbing... It says something about the reach of foreign powers within Australia.” Clive Hamilton, professor of public ethics at Charles Sturt University, tells me: “Australians should know that China’s secretive Ministry of State Security has been carrying out a campaign of intimidation in this country against critics of the regime. It’s illegal and nasty.” Hamilton, co-author of the upcoming Hidden Hand: Exposing How the Chinese Communist Party is Reshaping the World, says ASIO is trying to monitor activities of this kind. “I hope we see some arrests and prosecutions soon. When that happens, we can expect the usual hysterical denials and calculated outrage from the Chinese embassy, state newspapers and the Party-affiliated Chinese-language media in Australia.”

It’s understood that no arrests have been made in the Horton case, which has been kept from the public gaze. The Hortons report a “constantly revolving cast of characters” at their fence and in their driveway. If any were apprehended by police they would be questioned, cautioned, released, and another would take their place. “This is not an amateur operation,” remarks a security insider.

Politically motivated attacks on non-Chinese Australians are rare, but not unknown. In July last year a University of Queensland student, Drew Pavlou, a vocal critic of the university’s ties with Chinese organisations, says he was assaulted while leading a pro-Hong Kong rally on campus. “In the aftermath I saw my social media flooded by hundreds of abusive messages from supporters of the Chinese government,” says Pavlou, who is Greek-Australian. “There were dozens of threats in Mandarin and English. They threatened to kill me and my family, to rape my mother. It’s a terror tactic to silence critics of the Chinese government.’’ Another position on the spectrum of debate about Chinese influence in Western society is occupied by John Keane, professor of politics at the University of Sydney, who warns about the “prejudice known as Orientalism” and points to “the treatment of Sun Yang by Australian xenophobes”.

Sun rose to fame in China when he became the first Chinese man to win an Olympic gold medal in swimming in 2012 (he won two: the 400m and 1500m). So when Horton defeated the Chinese superstar in the 400m in Rio, on the evening of August 6, 2016, it was bound to ramp up tensions.

Almost immediately Swimming Australia, the sport’s governing body, received letters from its Chinese equivalent threatening reprisals over Horton’s “drug cheat” claims. Shortly after the expiry of the deadline these letters had set for an apology, Swimming Australia’s website was hacked and crashed. Around this time, the Australian Census website went down after it was hit by concerted cyber attacks launched from overseas, in a major embarrassment for the Turnbull government and the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Some tech commentators have speculated that these attacks were part of the blowback from Rio.

But there was one lighter moment to the post-Rio backlash. Horton’s coach, Craig Jackson, took six months off to travel around South America and in the jungles of Colombia he met a group of British students who told of a friend in the UK by the name of Matt Horton. “His Instagram account had been bombarded with insults by Sun’s supporters,” Jackson says. “He even wrote to Mack to ask him to please apologise.”

The Hortons are happy to tell the story of their “grand adventure”, as they like to call it – and in the telling, to put it behind them. I catch up for a video call with Andrew, 53, and Cheryl, 52, a month after the announcement of Sun Yang’s eight-year ban – a punishment that will likely end his career, barring a successful appeal. It’s late March, and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics have just been postponed. Mack, a 24-year-old La Trobe University business management student when he is not chewing up laps in the pool, marked the suspension of training with his first drink in a long time – a negroni – and a handful of almond croissants. But now he has been advised to “shut down” any media engagements amid security concerns: his mother had spied a “serious” drone above the house. Things that had once seemed extraordinary – death threats, abuse, home invasions – are now the wallpaper of their domestic lives. Andrew insists that his son’s protest in South Korea last year was as unrehearsed as his “drug cheat’’ remark in Rio. “It’s not about the result and it’s not about China and it’s not about Sun Yang,” he says. “For Mack, it’s all about clean sport.”

Andrew and Cheryl were in the stands at Rio watching the races when they felt the first ripples of all this. “I saw John Bertrand [president of Swimming Australia] and Mark Anderson [CEO] running towards us with a bunch of support staff,” Andrew recalls. “John asked if I’d had a conversation with Mack about what he was going to say about Sun Yang and I said, ‘No. I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’ve no idea what he’s going to say’. At that point John told me [that Mack had made the drug cheat claim] and I went, ‘Oh… ok-ay’.”

Immediately, and without his knowledge, a Brazilian special forces commando was assigned to shadow the swimmer. His parents, too, had protection; wherever they went they noticed the same two “friendly” young men nearby. “It was only when we were leaving the hotel and saw them putting machine guns into the boot that the penny dropped,” says Cheryl.

Since the Rio games there have been suggestions that Mack’s outing of Sun, made between the heats and the final, was merely astute pre-event gamesmanship: in the 400m freestyle final Sun was more than one and a half seconds off his winning London Olympics time, and immediately after the race was filmed in tears. Others speculate that it was a way for Mack, at his first Olympics, to spur himself on. He told reporters after the event: “The last 50 metres I was thinking about what I said and what would happen if he gets me here.” Craig Jackson tells me there was “no preconceived plan to say any of that, but after he made the comments he had to live up to his words. Mack certainly enjoys the big stage, and there is no stage bigger than the Olympics.”

The heats for Mack’s other big event, the 1500m freestyle, were held the following week. The night before, during an interview for Australian television, Andrew noticed his phone light up with text messages. Two suspicious vans had been spotted outside the family’s home, where their other son Chad was preparing for his Year 12 exams. Andrew shows me one of the texts from a concerned neighbour, which reads: “The garage door was open and so was the house and Mila [the family dog] is missing. The alarm is going off now I am waiting for the police to arrive.”

Cheryl cuts a sharp look at her husband as he tells me this. “This is news to me as well,” she says. “Well I’m letting you know,” Andrew continues. “At around that time the school contacted us by SMS to say they were getting threats concerning Chad. He was actually doing a practice exam so he was escorted out of the school and spent the rest of the Olympics at his mate’s house.” Nothing was stolen from the home, and the dog eventually returned. “By the time the police arrived they’d hightailed it.”
Mark Anderson, former CEO of Swimming Australia, vividly recalls meeting the Hortons in a stairwell of the stadium at Rio soon after their son’s victory in the 400m freestyle. “They were trying to celebrate what was the biggest moment in Mack’s career,” he says. “I was hearing of the break-in at home where the son was still living. They were concerned about Mack in the intense environment in Rio and their son a world away at home. They were justifiably concerned about the safety of both children. The celebration was tinged with concern – it was etched on their faces. But it says something about them that they were able to conduct themselves with dignity throughout.”

The following year Mack Horton told reporters that the ferocity of the blowback – the threats and harassment aimed at him and his family – had changed nothing. “I think I would do the same thing even if I knew the outcome.” And so, two years later, he did. Andrew and Cheryl were back in the stands to cheer on their son at the World Championships in South Korea. They didn’t know he was considering another protest. “But in hindsight we knew something was going to happen,” Cheryl admits. “There was an expectation – you could feel it in the air. Either Mack was going to protest, or someone else would.”

Her son’s actions are immortalised in the iconography of competitive sport. In footage of the event, silver medallist Mack, lantern-jawed and bespectacled like a blond Clark Kent, congratulates Italian bronze medallist Gabriele Detti with a handshake but ignores his gold medallist Chinese rival. When it dawns on Sun that Horton won’t stand next to him on the podium his expression stiffens, and he offers a strained smile. None of the three medal winners in this awkward tableau seems to be playing the standard part: Horton, the steely protester, is resolute yet anxious, uncertain. Nor is there much joy in the smiles Sun and Detti are able to muster. When the trio walks off the stage Sun waves to the crowd, but his smile has once again curdled; Horton brings up the rear with long strides, arms clasped behind his back.

Fresh in the mind of Horton and every swimmer at those championships was a recent report in the UK Sunday Times detailing how three anti-doping testers had arrived at Sun’s home in September 2018 to administer out-of-competition blood and urine tests. Blood was taken at a nearby clubhouse. In the early morning, after a clash between Sun and the officials about their accreditation, qualifications and behaviour – followed by a lengthy standoff – blood samples were allegedly destroyed by Sun’s entourage on the instructions of Sun’s mother Ming Yang. In January 2019 – three weeks before publication of the damning Sunday Times investigation – the sport’s global governing body, FINA, had cleared Sun of wrongdoing on a technicality. So when Mack Horton refused to mount the winners’ podium his protest was as much against FINA’s inaction as it was against Sun.

As the medal ceremony was playing out he heard roars of approval from his fellow athletes. But his parents, who were sitting in a spectator stand opposite, heard only the boos and jeers from Sun Yang’s supporters. “It ramped up after that,” recalls Andrew. Next day a security official told him that in 24 hours “Australian consular officials in China had received more than nine million messages and not one of them was pleasant”. The day after, his company was again targeted.

The following day father and son spoke. It was a testy conversation. “In the athlete’s village they have very little idea of what’s happening outside,” says Andrew. “Athletes turn off their social media and disconnect. I explained to Mack that while I fully support his stance, he just needs to be mindful that these things have flow-on implications. It’s the only time we’ve had a serious disagreement.”

“But if nobody stands up, nothing changes,” says Cheryl. “I get that,” replies Andrew, turning to address his wife directly. “But he just hadn’t considered the full implications.”
Mack’s silent snub again made global news. It also set off a chain reaction. A few days later British swimmer Duncan Scott, who was placed joint third in the 200m freestyle, also refused to join Sun for pictures on the winner’s podium or to shake his hand. Sun confronted Scott and called him a “loser”. Scott and Mack received official warnings from FINA, and both were overwhelmed by death threats from Sun’s fans on social media.

Craig Jackson, Mack’s coach, wasn’t in South Korea that night. He recalls a conversation with Mack a week before the championships that suggested his charge was stewing over the issue of clean sport, and might have been pondering a protest. “I don’t recall the exact words,” Jackson says. “But he didn’t rule it out... We’d spoken a lot about clean sport, and I knew his position. He’s true to his values.” He watched Mack’s protest at the medal presentation from his lounge. “To be honest I agree 100 per cent with the statement he’s making but as a coach I’m sitting there going, ‘You know, I’d prefer you didn’t do that.’”
Mack was well aware of the burden borne by his family after the comment about Sun in Rio. Why then, having poked the dragon and felt the heat, go for Sun again in South Korea? “It says something about his laser-like focus on swimming as well as he can and as fast as he can, and his feelings about fairness in his sport,” Andrew reflects. “And I think he is insulated from a lot of things. One day he’ll have a family of his own and he’ll look back with a better appreciation of how much background support he had.” Mack later spelt out what the protest was, and wasn’t, about: “This isn’t a China-Australia thing. This isn’t a China versus the world thing. This is a principle in the way the sport is governed and controlled.”

In February this year FINA’s decision to clear Sun was overturned on an appeal from the World Anti-Doping Authority to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which slapped Sun with an eight-year suspension. The unanimous verdict was a blow to FINA’s prestige and authority, and to Sun and his family’s fortunes. And it was a stunning vindication of Mack Horton’s stance.
Andrew Horton is inclined to view Sun – an only child with boyish movie-star looks who is unafraid to show his emotions in victory or in loss – as the “victim” of an enormously powerful system with a vast global reach. He points to a recent post from Ming Yang, made after her son’s eight-year ban, in which she alleges an official cover-up over his 2014 doping penalty and rages against his legal team at the CAS hearing. Chinese authorities had initially kept Sun’s three-month suspension in 2014 under wraps, revealing it to the public after he had competed in the Asian Games of September that year. In her since deleted post, Ming Yang alleges that the Chinese Swimming Association manipulated the timing of the news so that his results at the Asian Games – three gold and one silver – would remain intact.

In her post Ming Yang gives a touching insight into the family life of a Chinese swimming star: “I couldn’t sleep at night, powerless and helpless. My son struggled in the swimming pool for more than 20 years, and was strangled by power and lies.”
Even at the age of 10, before swimming had taken hold of his life, Mack Horton was unusually attuned to the spirit of fair play. “This is a kid who as a young basketball player used to throw the ball to players on the other team who he thought weren’t getting a fair go,” recalls his father. “Needless to say, he didn’t get very far with basketball.”
In another life Mack’s sensitivity to injustice might have propelled him into an altruistic profession, but his mother’s feeling for water had a large bearing on his passion for the pool. When Cheryl first started dating the man she would marry – both hail from Perth – a big moment in their courtship was her discovery of his family’s pool. “I could never get her out of the water,” Andrew recalls. “Cheryl and the boys just love the water: the feeling of it flowing over their bodies. It’s in their DNA. It’s like a drug.”

Asked if she recalls how she passed on this passion to her youngest son, Cheryl makes a dunking motion. “He was a reluctant swimmer,” she laughs. “Scared of the water. But once he put his head under he loved it. He couldn’t stop.”
By 2008, 12-year-old Mack was showing great promise – he had the hunger and what his father describes as the “natural metrics of a world-class swimmer”. Even then, though, Andrew wasn’t sure if Mack knew what he was letting himself in for: the pain as well as, just perhaps, the fame. “Do you really want this?” he asked his son one day. Mack turned towards him with a “deadset straight in the eyes” gaze. “But Dad, you don’t seem to understand,” he said. “When I swim I feel like I’m flying. And the faster I swim the better it feels.” Andrew felt his chest tighten, as if he had seen his future. He called Cheryl to say, “We’re going to have to get used to this. It’s not going to go away. It’s going to need the support of the whole family.”

“I knew it would have a huge impact,” he tells me. “Swimming can be brutal on families.” And yet Mack “loved the toughness”, Andrew says. “The pain was nothing to him.” He wanted it so badly that some time in his 13th year he pasted the world record time for the 1500m freestyle on his ceiling. The Hortons like to think of themselves as an “ordinary” family; in their pursuit of normality they’ve banished swimming trophies and photos – even swimming as a conversation topic – from the family home. But they’ve kept the old 1500m record on the ceiling of Mack’s room. “We kept telling him as he was growing up that he was an ordinary person who did some extraordinary things,” says Andrew. The desire to ground the child who was flying in the pool is one reason Andrew and Cheryl felt no shame forcing their myopic son onto the tennis court from time to time. “It was a way of bringing home to him that he was just a mug like the rest of us.”

The way Andrew tells it, Mack’s alma mater, Caulfield Grammar, approached him in January last year for guidance with its new $25 million aquatic centre. Both father and son were chuffed by the idea. Andrew was on good terms with the school and he, together with Craig Jackson, who was asked for his expertise in high performance swimming programs, offered their help. “For most of the year we were talking with the school once or twice a week,” he recalls. “Mack and I also were participating in school events.”

But around October – three months after Mack’s protest in Gwangju and coincidentally the same month Cheryl found a bucketload of glass in the family pool – Andrew and Craig felt the school had cooled towards them. Calls that were once answered promptly were now ignored. Around this time, Andrew believes, the school’s contract with its Nanjing campus in China, which hosts Caulfield Grammar’s Year 9 students each year for a five-week program, came up for renegotiation. The school’s Wikipedia entry makes no mention of Mack Horton in its entry on sporting alumni. Instead it notes the achievements of Chris Judd and John Schultz – Brownlow Medallists – and John Landy, who held the men’s mile record in the 1950s.

In February this year, after media reports alleged that Caulfield Grammar had scrapped plans to name its aquatic centre after Mack Horton, principal Ashleigh Martin moved to defuse the issue, labelling the reports incorrect. “The school has not started a process for naming the facility after any individual, or decided at this time if it will be named after any individual,” the statement read. “Caulfield Grammar School and its community have great pride, respect and admiration for Mack Horton, as both an Olympic swimmer and as a Caulfield Grammarian.”

While Andrew points out that “swimming fast doesn’t entitle you to have a building named after you”, he has at least one powerful ally in Gina Rinehart, Swimming Australia’s patron. “Like many Australians I was very surprised in relation to Caulfield Grammar, as any school should be thrilled to bits to be able to have Mack as alumni,” she tells me by email. “I did ask his parents if they would like me to write to the school to mention this on Mack’s behalf, but they did not wish this, saying Mack’s focus is on training.”

Things have changed dramatically for the Hortons since Sun Yang was given the eight-year ban. The “hate” has lost much of its heat. Sun, disgraced, has been derided online by many of his former fans; Mack, once widely vilified, has been publicly vindicated. Andrew, who claims to have much sympathy for Sun and his parents, shares, at the very least, something of their pain as families dedicated to their athletically elite offspring.

Mack Horton was prepared to make a stand for clean sport. But there is a pyrrhic quality to his moral victory, for it has taken a heavy toll on family, friends, neighbours and a largely invisible web of support. “It’s been a grand adventure,” reflects Andrew. “But it’s certainly not what we anticipated when we chose to encourage our children in sport.”

This will be a nightmare. I expect "Antiques Roadshow" to search off atmosphere. You can't eat that thing. I was watching it the other night and someone around the program said some prices were down by 33% in some areas of collecting.

I Used Reddit To Acquire 7,239 New Users (and 47,611 Visitors) With $0 In Ad Spend In Just Under 10 Hours. Here’s How!

I Used Reddit To Acquire 7,239 New Users (and 47,611 Visitors) With $0 In Ad Spend In Just Under 10 Hours. Here’s How!
Facebook, Instagram, Google, Youtube -- all of these have one thing in common. The costs to advertise on these platforms just seem to keep going up.
With big names entering the digital marketing scene in droves, it’s no longer easy for the small start ups, solopreneurs, and marketers on shoestring budgets to ef fectively campaign and show ROI to investors and employers.
This was an issue we faced at Rezi, more specifically the issue I (the marketer) faced.
(Shameless plug): Rezi is a SaaS company that offers job seekers an alternative to building resumes. Instead of the pretty, glamorous templates you see on most resume generators (which actually lower your chances of getting interviewed), you get access to simple, standardized resume templates that pass Applicant Tracking Systems - the hiring algorithm companies use to organize and track candidates.
Ok. Let’s get back into it.
Where were we.. that’s right advertising costs and the feeling of dread stemming from a failure of profitable marketing.
Here are some stats from Rezi’s ad account on Facebook:
  • Cost per free trial at the top of funnel: $5.45 to $11.65
  • Cost per free trial at the middle of funnel: $3.92 to $4.26
  • Cost per lead at the top of funnel (free ebook): $16.55 (WTF?)
  • Conversion rate of free to paid = 0.9%
  • TLDR; We were projected to spend $600 for one customer.
Here’s the math $6 (cost per free trial) * 100 (the number of sign-ups we need for a paying subscriber).
All for a $9/mo product (LTV ≈ $37). Uh oh.
Being the incredible marketer I am, I decided to go to Google.
A little cheaper, but not by much.
Well eff that.Let’s target Pakistan..... just kidding.
Brainstorm time: if we have a referral program, then we can add some virality to it right?
Sure, there was an issue though. Like most startups, Rezi was understaffed. Meaning, there was only one person that can implement a project like that, and he was busy working on the app. Shit.
With no one to turn to and out of options, it was time to commit ritual suicide.
But then there was a knock on the door. It was Reddit.
The founder, being a huge fan of Reddit and active on the boards, posted an AMA titled “When I graduated college, I had interviews at Google, Dropbox, Goldman Sachs, and others because of my resume, despite a 2.2 GPA. Now we've built a software to make the same resume for free. AMA!”
Jackpot.
One person came in from Reddit, then 10, then a hundred.. until:
https://preview.redd.it/gciembucywa41.png?width=2232&format=png&auto=webp&s=cddf8309c807a6c15079c48eddbb939b1ce2fee8
500 users were on the site at any given time. From the United States, Canada, UK, even Dubai, you name it.
https://preview.redd.it/7mohawieywa41.png?width=2232&format=png&auto=webp&s=dfd9b87fe533e089b9c7ff3be006a51ab6c3e8fa
And suddenly the issue of acquiring users wasn't so much of a problem.
https://preview.redd.it/meufbn4gywa41.png?width=2232&format=png&auto=webp&s=8be53077b99d20c7df2b4c158fc586d41e858fe8
Brand recognition helped with search engines as well. As people began to search for Rezi on Google, big G began to take notice and Rezi’s rank began to go up as well:
https://preview.redd.it/8ts2jpsiywa41.png?width=1552&format=png&auto=webp&s=536d7052278d558e38e2c2582d311a98f7676b31
The days of 10 web search clicks per day were over, now it was time for 100 web clicks per day.
But the question still remains. What drove people to click? Is it replicable? And if so, what’s the formula?
First up, the headline.
In Shane Snow’s book, titled “Smartcuts”, he tells the story of Upworthy, then a fairly unknown new and media site, which eventually experienced viral growth in 2013.
Largely known for click-bait titles, almost to a fault, Upworthy was also a master of experimentation. Now dubbed the 25 Headline Upworthy challenge, the small news company would use a/b testing to see some of its article titles perform 165% better than others of the same article.
Their headlines would often hit on an emotional level, pulling heartstrings to generate clicks.
Of course that wasn’t the intent with our Reddit post title, but there was naturally a bit of a shock value:
Today Google receives over 3 million applications per year. To hear back from Google, well a near impossibility. But how was it that the founder was able to get a callback from Google, Goldman, and Dropbox… all with a 2.2 GPA?
Everyone wants to know.
Next is story.
Call it Star Wars, Harry Potter, even The Shining, you’ll always see the same recipe: story.
Here’s how the story brand framework (by Donald Miller) works:
There’s a hero, with a problem, who meets a guide, that gives them a plan, with a call to action, which results in success (or failure avoided).
Here we have the hero: people who are looking to write resumes (in case you forgot Rezi is a resume software) to land a job (some with horrible GPAs, myself included), who meets a guide (the founder), who gives them a plan and an action step (Rezi) which results in a 100% pass rate for hiring bots.
The story is there, and it’s a good one at that.
Trust
It’s the best way to build a relationship, without it we’re all just strangers. Case and point: Facebook - once the privacy issues started coming up, Facebook users became more and more wary of the product. In the eyes of the people, Mark Zuckerberg was just another evil mogul.
Here’s how Rezi built trust with the community, and how you can too. It all comes down to engaging with the community and sharing core values:
https://preview.redd.it/q4i52cukywa41.png?width=2232&format=png&auto=webp&s=e2f32f7ec1dc91ffc5e4f0ffb4d4dc0f307bc3fa
Viral coefficient
There were two factors that contributed to this AMAs virality.
And one of them goes back to the trust mentioned earlier.
A while back, Rezi actually had another post on Reddit. It was the resume writing subreddit and found some traction there. Until one day, after one post to many, Rezi was banned. For life.
But Rezi picked itself up, and it soldiered on - learning from past mistakes - this time, it wasn’t going to happen again.
So before posting, the founder would reach out to the moderators of the AMA subreddit and ask their permission prior. Which the moderator appreciated.
When the post went live, it was a slow day in the subreddit. With no interesting posts in sight, the moderator decided to do the unthinkable. He gave his new friend.. a badge. Almost immediately, the post received more attention.
Now unbeknownst to the moderators, there was a certain trick up the sleeves. We knew the post would garner interest if people were able to see it. But how was the question.
It was through….. (*whispers*) the purchase of 50 upvotes. Yes, it may have been a bit of cheating, and maybe it wasn’t totally free. But 50 upvotes leading to 31.2K upvotes is money little and well spent.
Bonus Level: Timing
Every January, interest in resumes picks up. New year, new me? NO. New year, new resume. This interest picks up until November 18, at which point, interest plummets.
https://preview.redd.it/g8uunromywa41.png?width=1532&format=png&auto=webp&s=e8322b7ec5b9cbd31beb2277dbdd4afdab90dc36
Having gone out on November 14th, Rezi would make it just in time to take advantage of the dwindling, yet existing interest. Always keep timing and customer interest in mind.
So what can we learn from all this? Simply put, Facebook, Instagram, Google, and Youtube can go fu--
Breathe.
There’s a platform for each business model and as marketers, it’s our job to figure it out.. and at the heart of it all is experimentation. Even if you fail once, twice, thrice, keep digging and one day a diamond might turn up. For us it was Reddit (and now you know how we did it), for others it may very well be Facebook ads, or influencers, or affiliates, and the list goes on. Any failure is just a beginning to success (as long as you keep experimenting).
Now before I end this on a corny note, I wanted to ask you, what are some innovative ways that you generated traffic? What were your results on Facebook/IG and Google/Youtube like?
Thanks for reading. And best of luck.

New moderators and our Discord Server!

Hello!

The mod application period previously is over and 3 new moderators are here to join us! Lets congratulate them :) Here are their brief self-introductions that they want you to know about.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
u/Roctoure **(Discord/frontpage mod)**My name is Rocty and I'm one of the newest chosen mods! I don't really have anything special about myself other than I'm a veteran social weeb I guess lol! I am currently legend in ML and I'm from England so feel free to carry me in ranked XD. My aims for this sub-Reddit is to ensure it's a place where people come to enjoy themselves but not so by trampling over others feelings! I often get quite tilted during ranked matches and I might've said some things which I really didn't mean but coming here and just lurking around the memes makes my tilted life seem alright and I offered to become a mod here and help set up this discord to ensure not only is our community becoming less toxic and more friendly but making ML a more enjoyable game as a whole!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
u/Ellie-san (CSS/Programming mod)
Hello! I'm Ellie-san, a long-time lurker of mobilelegends*, and just commented a couple of times on those where I feel like I had something to contribute. Front-end web development is my strong suit so I hope that can be of help. The past few months, I've been thinking of writing game guides and tutorials mainly for lower ranks (Master - Epic) so maybe I can get this started soon with the help of the other moderators (and you) if this goes well. I'm looking forward to getting to know & learning with* mobilelegends redditors and I will try my best. ^w^
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
u/pototakoala (Frontpage/Mod Mail mod)
My name is Mark. I'm an avid fan of CS:GO and MOBA games such as Dota 2, League, and ML. I hope to bring to this subreddit order and less spam, helping all the new players who post questions about how to play the game. Haha sorry i'm not super great wth words but i'll try my best to help this place grow into a better place!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But!

As stated in the previous post, I wanted to recruit 4 moderators. I have chosen 4 but one of them did not respond back, so I decided to pick someone new. However, to make it fair for everyone, mod applications are open once again from now till 10th July, 12PM GMT +8. I am looking for specifically a design mod. Please DM me u/unicornflai (NOT modmail) on why i should choose you and your background/experiences in design, website making, programming, and etc.

More importantly though, our mobilelegends subreddit has just opened it's newest active discord server!

Do note that this is the ONLY discord server directly affiliated to mobilelegends subreddit.

MCU Movies Behind the Scenes Facts *Wanted to do this for fun* Day 13: Captain America: Civil War

So i'm going to go on IMDB and look at each MCU movies behind the scenes facts and POST THE MOST INTERESTING ONES here, I will post each movie a day instead of what I did before where I did 10 posts, I will start with the first Iron Man and each day will be the next MCU movie after it, ending with Guardians 3, I will also do the Netflix Shows, Agents of Shield and Agent Carter

CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

1. The day before filming a fight scene with Robert Downey Jr., Sebastian Stan sent him a video of himself doing intense bicep curls in front of the decapitated head of an Iron Man suit. He attached the message, "Looking forward to our scene tomorrow Robert".

2. T'Challa had a much smaller role in the earlier drafts and did not even appear in costume, as the writers intended to put more focus on Spider-Man, and save Black Panther's origin for his own movie. However, when it looked like Marvel would not be getting permission to use Spider-Man, Black Panther's role was beefed up significantly. By the time they did get to use Spider-Man, T'Challa had already become so integral to the plot, that they decided to leave his role as it was, and give Spider-Man a smaller part.

3. Tom Holland commented on how intimidated he was when he came to screentest for Spider-Man, saying that Robert Downey Jr. took him aside and said, "Listen, I remember my screentest for Iron Man. I remember how terrified I was. Just think of it as an audition. It's nothing too scary. If you get it wrong, we'll just start again. No pressure."

4. The finalists for the Spider-Man role did separate screen tests with Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr., with the intent of seeing whose chemistry fit the best with Evans and Downey.

5. Sebastian Stan revealed that the backpack that Bucky is seen wearing in the trailers, contains journals that he has put together of his scattered memories.

6. When the production of the film wrapped, Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie raced each other while in their superhero suits.

7. (At around one hour and nineteen minutes) Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) remarks how attractive Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) is. Downey and Tomei had a relationship in the 1990s, and appeared in two other films together: Chaplin (1992) and Only You (1994).

8. The film coincides with the 75th Anniversary of Captain America, the 10th Anniversary of the original Civil War comic book, and Black Panther's 50th Anniversary.

9. In the film, the Falcon utilizes a falcon drone called Redwing. In the mainstream Marvel comics, Redwing was an actual falcon, which was Sam Wilson's sidekick.

10. Chris Evans revealed that he was hesitant to take the role of Captain America early on, but now considers it one of the best decisions he has ever made.

11. (At around one hour and thirty-five minutes) One scene shows Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) being boosted by an arrow from Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). This is taken directly from the comics, specifically The Avengers #223.

12. (At around one hour and nineteen minutes) Co-Director Joe Russo said that "The most powerful shot of the film" was Steve Rogers stopping a helicopter from taking off, with his bare hands. The shot was featured in the first teaser trailer for this movie. Russo said Chris Evans worked very hard in the gym to physically embody the character, because they wanted to test the limits of Steve's physical strength. About the shot itself, he noted, "On-set, we had Chris straining against a crane, holding the helicopter to get this fantastic shot of his muscles bulging, and you can feel the energy and determination as he tries to stop it."

13. This movie revealed that Bucky Barnes had been hiding out in Bucharest, which is the capital of Romania. Sebastian Stan (Bucky) is a Romanian-American actor, who was born in Constanta, Romania, and raised there until he was eight. In the first scene set in Bucharest, Bucky is buying fruits from a street market. Stan's native language is Romanian, and therefore spoke it perfectly.

14. Spider-Man was very nearly removed from the film, as Sony Pictures originally rejected Marvel's proposal to allow them a cut of the profit if they could pull Spider-Man over, but Sony Corporation expressed disappointment in the financial returns and the critical reception of The Amazing Spider-Man series and decided to negotiate a deal again.

15. Screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely's original idea for this movie was a vastly different and much smaller film without the other Avengers, but Producer Kevin Feige suggested they adapt Civil War instead. Certain parts of their original idea still made into the movie, such as the emphasis on Steve and Bucky's relationship, as well as the use of Baron Zemo as the villain.

16. Tom Holland is the youngest person to portray Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man, on-screen, at nineteen years old.

17. The film shows a bond beginning to form between Scarlet Witch and Vision, who were married for a while in the comic books.

18. Chadwick Boseman (T'Challa, a.k.a. Black Panther) underwent a vigorous training program to get in fighting shape for the character. While admittedly not a big reader of comics as a kid, Boseman read as many comics as possible for anything Black Panther-related. Boseman also recycled the Xhosa accent he learned for Message from the King (2016), for the character.

19. Samuel L. Jackson was "surprised" to discover that Nick Fury would not be in the film after "the Russo Brothers told him he was." Executive Producer Nate Moore stated that Fury was not included "because he didn't add anything to the Civil War story they were telling."

20. In an interview, Daniel Brühl (Zemo) said the budget for this movie was so huge, that you could make twenty films from it.

21. Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans described the dynamic between Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, and Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, as a marriage, saying, "We love each other, but it's explosive. You're working toward the same goal, but you have very different approaches to it. It's blurry, and that's what makes it great. No one's right, no one's wrong. It's going to make it even harder for them to come to an agreement."

22. This was the longest Marvel film, at two hours and twenty-seven minutes, until Avengers: Infinity War (2018), at two hours and twenty-nine minutes.

23. Robert Downey Jr. acted as the younger Tony Stark, along with John Slattery and Hope Davis. Lola FX provided the "de-aging" visual effects on the face and hair of Downey with footage and photos of his early career as references.

24. In the post-credits scene, Peter's web shooter emits a light which strongly resembled the "Spidey Signal" seen in the comics. This is the debut of the Spidey Signal on-screen.

25. Anthony Mackie described the film as "The Avengers: Part 2.5". Jeremy Renner said it would be like an Avengers movie, due to a lot of characters being involved.

26. The appearance of Giant-Man was kept secretive throughout production and marketing, evident from the absence of said character in all trailers and television ads, but this movie's Funko Pop! figurines, and a Lego set, depicting the airport battle scene featured Giant-Man, was released and advertised before the movie's release date.

27. Tom Hiddleston confessed that even though he did not appear in the film, it contained one of his favorite moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the helicopter scene. He enthused, "I mean Chris Evans does a bicep curl, with a helicopter! If you don't love that, we can't be friends."

28. (At around one hour and nine minutes) Chris Evans injured his arm muscles while filming the iconic shot of Captain America holding back a helicopter with his hands. Evans said, "That shot is a little bit of bicep porn. 'Zoom in on the biceps', that's what the script said. Kevin Feige didn't airbrush my biceps, that's me. It's not a utilitarian shot, it's a shot where you're trying to look heroic. That position (of holding the helicopter with one hand and the ledge with another) is actually a very unnatural position to use to stop something, but we used it because I have to flex my bicep, you are trying to make the scene look great, and I genuinely messed my arm up doing that shot because of the strain." Robert Downey Jr. joked that the filmmakers didn't mind that Evans hurt himself because of how great the shot turned out, and they have been using it to promote the film ever since. Anthony Russo revealed that the iconic shot almost did not happen because on the day of the filming, there was a miscommunication with the Costume Department and Evans came in wearing a thick jacket. They immediately sent him back to change, because then they wouldn't have been able to film the shot of his muscles bulging as intended in the script.

29. The film was going to feature The Incredible Hulk, but he was shifted to Thor: Ragnarok (2017), and so the filmmakers chose Secretary of State Thaddeus E. "Thunderbolt" Ross (William Hurt) in the film, as a substitute to illustrate the theme of destructive power: "We thought it would be interesting to use a character who had a fanatical anti-superhero point of view, built on experience. He's cornering The Avengers politically now, he's out-maneuvering them."

30. Mark Ruffalo was spotted on the set of this movie, thus sparking rumors of a potential Hulk appearance in it. But his role was ultimately cut from the final draft of the script.

31. Marvel initially wanted to hire Robert Downey Jr. to reprise Tony Stark as a small role, with just three weeks of work. However, Downey wanted a larger role, which would lead to a bigger payday. Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter was furious over the request, prompting him to order the screenwriters to write Tony Stark out of the script completely. When the deal seemed like it was off the table, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige pushed to hire Downey, citing that his casting in the film could leave the door open for sequels, new franchises, and dramatic possibilities within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as this movie could drive future storylines for these films. As a result with Downey's casting, the actor received a substantial payout that included a back-end participation deal, and another payout if the film's box-office gross succeeded Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), which it did.

32. This is the live-action debut of T'Challa, the Black Panther, one of the first black superheroes in American comic books.

33. Chris Evans has stated that this film will set up Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

34. The filmmakers describe Bucky Barnes as a divided character, saying, "He's not Bucky Barnes anymore, he's not the Winter Soldier anymore. He's something in-between. There's a part of his personality that was under mind control, and he murdered a lot of people. So he has a very complicated history. Who is that person? How does that character move forward?"

35. In all three Captain America films, Bucky falling into a body of water represents a major change to the character. In Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), falling into the Potomac marks the beginning of his recovery. In this movie, falling into the river in Germany makes him realize the brainwashing still affects him. He also falls into a river during his "death scene" in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), which marks his transformation into an assassin, but this is not revealed until the second film.

36. Costume Designer Judianna Makovsky revealed that for all of Chris Evans' scenes, where he is in regular outfits (outside the suit), they purposefully made him wear t-shirts, which are many sizes smaller than his actual size, so that his muscles pop on camera. Evans said all of his t-shirt scenes are scheduled at the start of the filming, because he loses a lot of weight over the months it takes to film a Marvel movie. He said, especially, that filming the action scenes wearing the Captain America suit, makes him lose a lot of his size.

37. The Black Panther costume is a combination of a practical costume and visual effects.

38. During the airport fight scene, a truck has the Bluth family logo. It is the same "stair car" (portable staircase for an airplane) that was the subject of many running jokes on Arrested Development (2003). The Russo Brothers, the directors of this movie, also directed the pilot, and many other episodes of Arrested Development (2003).

39. Paul Bettany describes the Vision as exploring what it means to be human and what love is: "The only way one can guarantee one's loyalty is love."

40. (At around one hour and fifty-five minutes) When Steve and Bucky remember going on a double date in Brooklyn when they were younger, Cap mentions Bucky's date was a redhead named Dolores, with the nickname "Dot". That description fits with one of Peggy Carter's nemeses from Agent Carter (2015), Dottie Underwood, also exploited as a weapon by the Soviets.

41. This movie marks the beginning of Phase Three in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is the thirteenth film overall.

42. Hope van Dyne was going to become The Wasp in an earlier draft of the script, but she was removed, due to concerns that reducing her role to a cameo alongside the other characters would be a disservice to her as a character. The fact that Evangeline Lilly was pregnant at the time also probably influenced the decision.

43. In the mid-credits scene, waterfalls are shown in the kingdom of Wakanda. These scenes were filmed at the Iguazú Falls in Misiones, Argentina.

44. (At around two hours and five minutes) The image near the end of the film, of Iron Man blasting Captain America's raised shield, is an homage to the Civil War part seven comic book cover.

45. (At around thirty-three minutes) The speech which Sharon Carter makes at Peggy's funeral, is taken from a speech which Captain America made in Amazing Spider-Man #537 - "Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world - No, you move."

46. Tom Holland made audition tapes together with Jon Bernthal while filming Pilgrimage (2017), with Holland landing the role of Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man, and Bernthal the role of Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher, in Daredevil (2015).

47. Chris Evans refuted claims that his biceps were CGI enhanced for the film's famous helicopter shot. He instead prepped a lot in lieu of artificial enhancement saying, "That was really my arm, and you know what, I took a page of Anthony Mackie's book. When we were doing Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), for certain scenes, I worked out just before the take, but there were a bunch of scenes where I was the only one out of the cast doing it, and I'd be embarrassed, and feel shame. So I didn't do it that often, and then we started Civil War, and Mackie has no shame. Before each take, Mackie's just curling weights non-stop and I thought, 'Yeah! What are you doing Chris? Just curl some weights! Who cares? I am not going to worry about twenty people judging me, as opposed to two hundred million people seeing the scene forever.' So before the helicopter scene, I lifted a lot of weights to get pumped. It's not like I woke up and I looked like that, that was me lifting weight for hours on end prior to filming that scene. There certainly was a lot of pressure. I was fully aware of what they wanted that shot to be. I wanted that shot to be great too."

48. Thor and The Incredible Hulk's absences in the film were explained in Thor: Ragnarök (2017).

49. Marisa Tomei was in her fifties when portraying Aunt May, in contrast to Rosemary Harris being in her seventies in Spider-Man (2002) and Sally Field in her sixties in The Amazing Spider-Man (2012).

50. (At around one hour and twenty-four minutes) Wanda (Scarlet Witch) can disable the Vision, because she received her powers from the mind stone. One of Vision's powers is to manipulate his body density, so he can become phantasmal, or stronger than diamonds. She made him so dense, that he became too heavy to move, and fell through the floor.

51. Spider-Man's suit design is based on his original look in the comics when he debuted in 1962. The goggles change size to reflect Spider-Man's expressive eyes in the comics, and also allow him to hone his senses and focus.

52. In the Civil War comic book series, Tony Stark builds Spider-Man an "Iron Spider" suit. It's red and gold, and laden with armor and gadgets. In this film, Spider-Man receives a suit in his normal red and blue cloth attire, but it does have gadgets.

53. According to Lola VFX, the visual effects studio who have worked on all three Captain America movies, in order to create the "young Tony Stark" illusion: "Every feature of the face and body needed to be addressed in some fashion. One thing that happens to all of us is that the skin of the face gradually lowers in certain areas, and needs to be 'lifted' back to where it was at the age in question. But other changes are incredibly subtle, such as increase in the way light reflects off the sheen of the skin, a reduction in the appearance of tiny blood vessels under the surface of some parts of the face, or more blood flow in the cheeks giving them that familiar youthful 'glow'. The shot was nearly four thousand frames long, with Tony Stark turning from one side to the other multiple times, physically interacting with other actors, and the set itself, and moving closer to the camera for a very long, uninterrupted close-up."

54. (At around one hour and forty-five minutes) When F.R.I.D.A.Y. shows Tony Stark the photos of Zemo, he asks if she's run facial recognition, to which she replies "What do I look like?" He said, "I don't know. I've been picturing a redhead." Kerry Condon, who voiced F.R.I.D.A.Y., is a redhead.

55. Marisa Tomei is the third Oscar-nominated actress to play Aunt May. Rosemary Harris is an Oscar nominee, and Sally Field is an Oscar winner (Tomei won an Oscar as well).

56. Costume Designer Judianna Makovsky said her favorite character to design, was Paul Bettany's Vision. She said she dressed him very stylishly, with elegant cashmere sweaters and cardigans, and gave him one of the "dandiest accessories", an ascot. She said that even though it might not be visible in the movie, he's wearing an ascot in most of his civilian scenes.

57. By the end of the movie, The Avengers logo on Captain America's arm is no longer there, representing the fact that The Avengers are no longer his.

58. After the "Civil War" crossover event in Marvel comics was complete, another big crossover event was "Secret Invasion", which revealed that the shape-shifting alien villains, The Skrulls, had been replacing key people in government and the super powered community for decades, and that they are at least partially to blame for leading to the events of the civil war as a means to soften human society for a full-scale invasion. Since the Skrulls are villains of the Fantastic Four, it had been assumed that Disney and Marvel could not use them in future films, but it was later discovered with the announcement of Captain Marvel (2019), that Skrulls can be used by Marvel Studios, as long as they don't include specific ones owned by FOX. However, the idea of a "secret invasion" in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is already very close to what happened when H.Y.D.R.A. revealed they grew inside S.H.I.E.L.D.

59. Zemo is the first primary antagonist of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies to not be an enhanced supervillain. However, the first one ever, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was Wilson Fisk, a.k.a. Kingpin, on Netflix's Daredevil (2015).

60. (At around one hour and twenty-seven minutes) On The Late Late Show with James Corden (2015), Paul Rudd admitted that much of Ant-Man's star struck reactions to meeting Captain America and his allies, were greatly based on his own real first reactions upon meeting those cast members. He even owned up to the inappropriate "arm fondling" bit, though it was in fact Sebastian Stan's mechanical arm he was so interested in, rather than Captain America's, as depicted in the film.

61. The title of this movie was jokingly announced as "Captain America: Serpent Society" during the announcement of Marvel Phase 3.

62. A large part of the film is set in Romania, where Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes) was born and where he lived until he was eight.

63. Unlike her previous Marvel movies, Scarlett Johansson never appeared for interviews, premieres, press conferences or any other events to promote the film.

64. In the Blu-ray commentary, they verify that the drawer, in which Bucky gets the gun, in Siberia, is labled "Romanov", and is Natasha's.

65. The Wakandan language spoken by King T'Chaka and Prince T'Challa is Xhosa, a native language of many South Africans.

66. (At around two hours and ten minutes) During the Battle of the H.Y.D.R.A. Siberian Facility, when Captain America is asked by Iron Man to stand down, he responds, "I could do this all day." This is phrase is also said twice in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), when Steve Rogers is beaten by a bully in an alley, and later by Red Skull. Rogers is rescued or helped directly after the sentence is stated.

67. Thaddeus E. "Thunderbolt" Ross' first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since his debut in The Incredible Hulk (2008). To date, that is the longest gap between a character's appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (eight years). Despite the long absence, William Hurt reprised the role, though Ross is now Secretary of State, as opposed to a General in The Incredible Hulk (2008). This also makes William Hurt the first actor from The Incredible Hulk (2008) to return in a later Marvel Cinematic Universe film, aside from Robert Downey Jr. and Stan Lee, who had cameos in The Incredible Hulk (2008).

68. The words to activate Bucky were, "Longing, Rusted, Seventeen, Daybreak, Furnace, Nine, Benign, Homecoming, One, Freight Car". Most of these words had a meaning specific to him, and some have meaning in the MCU (such as "Homecoming" alluding to "Spider-man Homecoming").

69. The Spider-Man suit in this movie was influenced by Steve Ditko and John Romita Sr.. The extra dark shading around the eyes and web cartridges on his belt are few of the minor updates.

70. No CGI was used during the highway chase scene when Bucky commandeers a moving motorcycle from under its rider, the whole stunt was practical.

71. The Vision's civilian clothing (slacks, sweater, Ascot) was inspired by 1940s actor Cary Grant's attire.

72. In the comics, while Spider-Man started off on Iron Man's side, he later shifted over to Captain America's side after learning that the Pro-Registration Side was imprisoning the captured unregistered heroes in a prison built in another dimension known as the "Negative Zone", against their will, without due process (as it is technically not on American soil) until they agreed to register. In this movie, he fights on Iron Man's side, before being sent home by Iron Man after the battle at the airport in Germany.

73. Despite the animosity between their characters, Anthony Mackie (Falcon) and Sebastian Stan (Bucky) are very close friends in real-life.

74. Ragnarök (Thor's clone) is an integral part of the comic version of Civil War, but not the movie.

75. (At around one hour and seven minutes) While fighting Bucky Barnes, Black Widow tells him, "You could at least recognize me." This may be a reference to a storyline in the comics, involving the link between the Winter Soldier and the Black Widow programs that enhanced them both with biotech. It may also be a reference to their comic romantic involvement, or it refers to the Marvel Cinematic Universe story she told in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), of being shot by him while on a mission, and various scenes in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), when he was trying to kill her.

76. Tom Hollands chatty, excited portrayal of Spider-Man in battle is closer to his comic counterpart than previous iterations of the character.

77. This is the fourth movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to gross over one billion dollars worldwide.

78. Daniel Brühl (Helmut Zemo) dubbed himself in the German dubbing of the movie.

79. Filming started on May 7, 2015, in Atlanta, Georgia. The cast was working in ninety degree Fahrenheit (thirty-two degree Celcius) weather in costume.

80. (At around fifty-seven minutes) In the film, when Bucky, Captain America, Falcon, and Black Panther are first captured, Bucky is placed in a cell marked "D23". "D23" is the official fan club for The Walt Disney Company and the fourth D23 Expo was held on August 14-16, 2015 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, where the first footage from the film was screened.

81. Mutants (such as the X-Men) play a part in the original comic book story, as human society had always held a prejudice against mutant-kind, while also being accepting of non-mutant heroes. When the tide turns against all powered people, some characters view it as fitting, since non-mutant heroes had it easy for so long, and others view it as troubling. Since Twentieth Century Fox owns the rights to the Marvel concept of "mutants", this wasn't a part of the film.

82. (At around forty-three minutes) When Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier) is in Bucharest, Romania, he is shown to be buying plums at a fruit market. Plums are beneficial in treating those with Alzheimer's disease, which therefore is suitable for Bucky, because he has been brainwashed, and is trying to remember his life before becoming the Winter Soldier.

83. (At around one hour and twenty minutes) During his meeting with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), Peter Parker (Tom Holland) tells him that he's only had his powers as Spider-Man for six months, clarifying the character's lack of involvement in previous Marvel Cinematic Universe films.

84. With a budget of two hundred fifty million dollars, this movie is tied as the fourth-most expensive superhero movie ever made, after Justice League (2017) (three hundred million dollars), Superman Returns (2006) (two hundred seventy million dollars), and Spider-Man 3 (2007) (two hundred fifty-eight million dollars).

85. According to the commentary, Cap dropping the shield foreshadows the appearance of the Nomad costume, a short period in the 1970s comics, where Cap continued to act as a hero without government sanction.

86. According to the Russo Brothers, the title for this movie has been in existence for over a decade.

87. The words "Homecoming" and "Seventeen", in Winter Soldier's H.Y.D.R.A. command, reference the title and date of release of Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).

88. Spider-Man has two costumes in this movie, his original makeshift one he's seen wearing in YouTube footage, and which Tony Stark eventually finds in Peter's apartment, and his new costume, created with Tony's collaboration, which more closely resembles the classic costume.

89. Ant-Man's helmet design has changed since the last movie. In Ant-Man (2015), the face-mask was in two parts. In this movie, the mask comes off as a solid piece.

90. Vision, Hawkeye, Ant-Man, and Scarlet Witch weren't part of the original comic book storyline. The first three were dead at the time, while Wanda was missing and insane.

91. Although Spider-Man's suit was composed of CGI for every scene, a physical prototype Spider-Man suit was built during production, that Tom Holland wore on-set during some filming. It wasn't until later, that the filmmakers decided to scrap the suit altogether, and replace it with a CGI version. The prototype suit differed from the final product on-screen, as it featured raised webbing, and a classic spider symbol, which was very reminiscent of the symbol shown in the very first Spider-Man comic, released in 1962.

92. Alfre Woodard plays Miriam, the mother of a young man who was killed during the events in Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) in Sokovia. In the Civil War comic book, Miriam's son (named Damian, who was in grade school in the comics) was killed when a battle that reached his school between the super hero team New Warriors and some bad guys, (including Nitro, whose powers include him being able to explode and reconstitute himself afterward) destroyed a nearby school bus, causing a large gas explosion that destroyed the school, which caused hundreds of deaths, and was the impetus for the Superhero Registration Act.

93. Peter Parker's homemade costume resembles Ben Reilly's Scarlet Spider original costume from the comics, but with inversed colors.

94. This is the first movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe where Tony Stark used only one Iron Man suit. In Iron Man (2008), Tony used the Mark I to escape the cave, the Mark II to experiment with the tech, and the Mark III to attack the Ten Rings, and his final battle with Stane. In Iron Man 2 (2010), Tony used the Mark IV at the beginning, the Mark V during his fight with Vanko at the Grand Prix, and the Mark VI in the final battle. In The Avengers (2012), Tony used the Mark VI for most of the movie, and then utilizes the Mark VII for the battle of New York City. In Iron Man 3 (2013), Tony used the Mark XLII, the silver centurion armor, the Mark XL and the "Heartbreaker" armor in his battle with Killian. In Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Tony utilized the Mark XLIII in the opening scene, and in his initial battle with Ultron. Then Tony used the Mark XLIV (Hulkbuster) armor against The Incredible Hulk in South Africa. Finally, Tony uses the Mark XLV in the battle of Sokovia. In this movie, Tony only used the Mark XLVI.

95. This is the fourth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to feature a pre-Marvel Studios logo "cold open" scene. The first was Iron Man 3 (2013), the second was Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), and the third was Ant-Man (2015).

96. Co-Director Joe Russo cited Se7en (1995) and Fargo (1996) as influences on this film.

97. (At around thirty-three minutes) Part of Sharon Carter's eulogy for Peggy Carter was written as part of the Marvel Civil War in the Spider-Man comics by J. Michael Straczynski, Writer and Creator of Babylon 5 (1994), and credited for the story for Thor (2011). The speech comes from an inspirational speech Captain America gave to Spider-Man during the Marvel Civil War, to explain why he continues to fight against the Superhuman Registration Act, when the country he represents is all for it. As a child, Captain America memorized a monologue that influenced his understanding of what it meant not only to be a patriot, but what it really meant to be an American. The whole philosophy stems from the writing of Mark Twain, in a monologue known as, "In a Republic, who is the Country?"

98. Tom Holland slightly hurt his nose while doing a flip during the filming of a scene.

99. This was the first theatrically released film, featuring Spider-Man, where the visual effects for the character are not being produced by another company affiliated with Sony, the rights holder to Spider-Man. Industrial Light & Magic, which handles much of the special effects for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, produced the visual effects.

100. Earlier drafts of a third Captain America film, had Brock Rumlow, a.k.a. Crossbones, secretly working as a mercenary for the Red Skull (just like in the comics), but these ideas were scrapped and re-worked, when the filmmakers decided to follow the "Civil War" storyline.

101. As of September 2018, this is the only Marvel Cinematic Universe movie featuring Thaddeus E. "Thunderbolt" Ross without Bruce Banner.

102. On October 13, 2014, it was announced that Robert Downey Jr. would be joining the cast of this film, and that it would follow the Civil War storyline.

103. Heidi Moneymaker and Aaron Toney (Super Soldiers #3 and #4) are stunt doubles that have appeared in many Marvel movies: Moneymaker has been Scarlett Johansson's (Black Widow's) stunt double since Iron Man 2 (2010), and Toney has been the stunt double for Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther), and Michael B. Jordan (Erik Killmonger).

104. Robert Downey Jr.'s seventh appearance as Tony Stark (counting his cameo in The Incredible Hulk (2008)).

105. The reported six finalists for the role of Peter Parker (Spider-Man) were Tom Holland, Asa Butterfield, Judah Lewis, Matt Lintz, Charlie Plummer, and Charlie Rowe.

106. Multiple references to different themes that aren't related to the Marvel Cinematic Universe are made throughout this movie: While confined, Falcon tells Iron Man to bring Mark Fuhrman if he wants him to talk (Mark Fuhrman was a key part in the 1994 to 1995 O.J. Simpson trial, having been thought to frame the football player because of his hatred towards black people), and during the final scene in Siberia, Iron Man calls Bucky Barnes "Manchurian Candidate", referring to the twice-filmed novel, in which American soldiers were brainwashed.

107. This is the first theatrical movie to have Spider-Man team up with other Marvel superheroes.

108. Bucky's code name "Winter Soldier" could have multiple sources of meaning. Winter could represent his maintenance, as he is kept on ice whenever he's inactive. It could represent that he is a relic from The Cold War, or that his humanity was stripped, to make him the coldest of assassins.

109. Marks the sixth collaboration between Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson in twelve years, following The Perfect Score (2004), The Nanny Diaries (2007), The Avengers (2012), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), and Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015).

110. (At around one hour and forty minutes) When Redwing hits Iron Man in the head during the airport scene, a circle of "feathers", possibly shrapnel, can be seen, as a reference to when characters are hit in cartoons or comics.

111. Certain clips form the airport scene were re-shot at a different angle from Spider-Man's perspective and used in the opening "video diary" scene in Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017).

112. The Raft, in the comics, is a facility in New York City, which is part of Ryker's Island Penitentiary, that is designed to hold captured supervillains, which is run by S.H.I.E.L.D. In the film, it is located somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean, and run by the U.S. Military instead, as S.H.I.E.L.D. has been disbanded. Notably, the first storyline of the New Avengers series, which started not long before the Civil War crossover event began, involving the prison riot, was actually the Raft's first appearance in the comics. While the Raft was not used in the original Civil War comic book storyline to hold the captured superheroes, it was mentioned though.

113. Logan Lerman, Dylan O'Brien, and Asa Butterfield (among many others) were considered for the role of Peter Parker.

114. (At around thirteen minutes) The young Tony Stark at the start of his M.I.T. presentation is the result of several months of CGI and modeling of Robert Downey Jr.. This was confirmed by Downey on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (2014).

115. Sebastian Stan packed on 28 pounds of muscle for the film. Boosting his weight from 172 pounds to a solid, muscular 200 pounds.

116. Every phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe starts with a film that features Tony Stark as at least one of the main characters. Phase One started with Iron Man (2008), Phase Two started with Iron Man 3 (2013), and Phase Three started with this movie.

117. Chad L. Coleman was considered for the role of T'Challa (Black Panther).

118. Like in the comics, this film demonstrates the most common side effect of all post-Erskine attempts to replicate the super-soldier formula: insanity.

119. (At around one hour and forty minutes) Spider-Man (Tom Holland) mentions Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980) during the fight with Giant-Man (Paul Rudd). This is a very appropriate quote, as Marvel now has regained the rights to create Star Wars comic books (and has been doing so again since January 2015).

120. Although she is never mentioned as a mutant (Twentieth Century Fox owned the term rights at that time), Scarlet Witch is the only mutant among The Avengers in this movie, and she is seen with a collar when locked in Raft Prision, which can be a reference to the X-Gene Inhibitor Collar, created in the comics by Bolivar Trask to suppress mutant powers. The collar has been featured before in X-2: X-Men United (2003) and X-Men: Days Of Future Past (2014).

🦋MK-Ultra FACTS🦋

🦋MK-Ultra FACTS
After WWII, the U.S. Department of Defense secretly imported many of the top German Nazi and Italian Fascist scientists and spies into the United States via South America and the Vatican. The code name for this operation was Operation PAPERCLIP.
🦋The Evolution of Project MKULTRA🦋
With the CIA and National Security Council firmly established, the first in a series of covert brainwashing programs was initiated by the Navy in the fall of 1947.
Project CHATTER was developed in response to the Soviet’s “successes” through the use of “truth drugs.” This rationale, however was simply a cover story if the program were to be exposed. The research focused on the identification and testing of such drugs for use in interrogations and the recruitment of agents.
The project was officially terminated in 1953.
The CIA decided to expand their efforts in the area of behavior modification, with the advent of Project BLUEBIRD, approved by director Allen Dulles in 1950.
Its objectives were to:
(1) discover a means of conditioning personnel to prevent unauthorized extraction of information from them by known means (2) investigate the possibility of control of an individual by application of special interrogation techniques (3) investigate memory enhancement (4) establish defensive means for preventing hostile control of agency personnel
In August 1951, Project BLUE BIRD was renamed Project ARTICHOKE, which evaluated offensive uses of interrogation techniques, including hypnosis and drugs.
The program ceased in 1956. Three years prior to the halt of Project ARTICHOKE, Project MK-ULTRA came into existence on April 13, 1953 along the lines proposed by Richard Helms, Deputy Director of Central Intelligence (DDCI) with the rationale of establishing a “special funding mechanism of extreme sensitivity.”[6]
The hypothetical etymology of “MK” may possibly stand for “Mind Kontrolle.” The obvious translation of the German word “Kontrolle” into English is “control.”[7]
A host of German doctors, procured from the post war Nazi talent pool, were an invaluable asset toward the development of MKULTRA. The correlation between the concentration camp experiments and the numerous sub-projects of MKULTRA are clearly evident.
The various avenues used to control human behavior under MK ULTRA included:
radiation electroshock psychology psychiatry sociology anthropology graphology harassment substances paramilitary devices materials “LSD” being the most widely dispensed “material”
A special procedure, designated MKDELTA, was established to govern the use of MKULTRA abroad. MKULTRA/DELTA materials were used for harassment, discrediting or disabling purposes.[8]
There were 149 sub-projects listed under the umbrella of MKULTRA. Project MONARCH has not been officially identified by any government documentation as one of the corresponding subprojects, but is used rather, as a descriptive “catch phrase” by survivors, therapists, and possible “insiders”.
MONARCH may in fact, have culminated from MKSEARCH sub-projects such as operation SPELLBINDER, which was set up to create “sleeper” assassins (ie. “Manchurian candidates”) who could be activated upon receiving a key word or phrase while in a post-hypnotic trance.
Operation OFTEN, a study which attempted to harness the power of occultic forces was possibly one of several cover programs to hide the insidious reality of Project MONARCH.
🦋Definition and Description🦋
The name MONARCH is not necessarily defined within the context of royal nobility, but rather refers to the monarch butterfly.
When a person is undergoing trauma induced by electroshock, a feeling of lightheadedness is evidenced; as if one is floating or fluttering like a butterfly. There is also a symbolic representation pertaining to the transformation or metamorphosis of this beautiful insect: from a caterpillar to a cocoon (dormancy, inactivity), to a butterfly (new creation) which will return to its point of origin. Such is the migratory pattern that makes this species unique.
Occultic symbolism may give additional insight into the true meaning Psyche is the word for both “soul” and “butterfly” coming from the belief that human souls become butterflies while searching for a new reincarnation. [9]
Some ancient mystical groups, such as the Gnostics, saw the butterfly as a symbol of corrupt flesh. The “Angel of Death” (remember Mengele?) in Gnostic art was portrayed crushing the butterfly.[10]
A marionette is a puppet that is attached to strings and is controlled by the puppet master, hence MONARCH programming is also referred to as the “Marionette Syndrome.” “Imperial Conditioning” is another term used, while some mental health therapists know it as “Conditioned Stimulus Response Sequences.”
Project MONARCH could be best described as a form of structured dissociation and occultic integration, in order to compartmentalize the mind into multiple personalities within a systematic framework. During this process, a Satanic ritual, usually including Cabalistic mysticism, is performed with the purpose of attaching a particular demon or group of demons to the corresponding alter(s).
🦋Alters and Triggers🦋
Another way of examining this convoluted victimization of body and soul is by looking at it as a complex computer program: A file (alter) is created through trauma, repetition and reinforcement. In order to activate (trigger) the file, a specific access code or password (cue or command) is required.
The victim/survivor is called a “slave” by the programmehandler, who in turn is perceived as “master” or “god.” About 75% are female, since they possess a higher tolerance for pain and tend to dissociate easier than males. Subjects are used mainly for cover operations, prostitution and pornography; involvement in the entertainment industry is notable.
A former military officer connected to the DIA, told this writer, “In the ’big picture’ these people [MONARCH victims] are in all walks of life, from the bum on the street to the white-collar guy”. In corroboration, a retired CIA agent vaguely discussed the use of such personnel to be used as “plants” or “chameleons” for the purpose of infiltrating a designated group, gathering information and/or injecting an ulterior agenda.
There are an inordinate amount of alters in the victim/survivor with numerous backup programs, mirrors and shadows. A division of light-side (good) and dark-side (bad) alters are interwoven in the mind and rotate on an axis. One of the main internal structures, (of which there are many) within the system is shaped like a double-helix, consisting of seven levels. Each system has an internal programmer which oversees the “gatekeeper” (demons?) who grant or deny entry into the different rooms.
A few of the internal images predominantly seen by victims/survivors are:
trees the Kabbalistic “Tree of Life,” with adjoining root systems infinity loops ancient symbols and letters spider webs mirrors or glass shattering masks castles mazes demons/monsters/aliens sea shells butterflies snakes ribbons bows flowers hour glasses clocks robots chain-of-command diagrams schematics of computer circuitry boards
🦋Bloodlines and Twinning🦋
A majority of the victims/survivors come from multi-generational Satanic families (bloodlines) and are ostensibly programmed “to fill their destiny as the chosen ones or chosen generations” (a term coined by Mengele at Auschwitz).
Some are adopted out to families of similar origin. Others used in this neurological nightmare are deemed as he “expendable ones” (non-bloodliners), usually coming from orphanages, foster care homes, or incestuous families with a long history of pedophilia.
There also appears to be a pattern of family members affiliated with government or military intelligence agencies.
Many of the abused come from families who use Catholicism, Mormonism, or charismatic Christianity as a “front” for their abominable activities (though members of other religious groups are also involved.) Victims/survivors generally respond more readily to a rigid religious (dogmatic, legalistic) hierarchical structure because it parallels their base programming. Authority usually goes unchallenged, as their will has been usurped through subjective and command-oriented conditioning.
Physical identification characteristics on victims/survivors often include multiple electrical prod scars and/or resultant moles on their skin. A few may have had various parts of their bodies mutilated by knives, branding irons, or needles, Butterfly or occult tattoos are also common. Generally, bloodliners are less likely to have the subsequent markings, as their skin is to “remain pure and unblemished.”
The ultimate purpose of the sophisticated manipulation of these individuals may sound unrealistic, depending upon our interpretive understanding of the physical and spiritual realms. The deepest and darkest alters within bloodliners are purported to be dormant until the “Antichrist” is revealed.
These “New World Order” alters supposedly contain call-back orders and instructions to train and/or initiate a large influx of people (possibly clones or “soulless ones”), thereby stimulating social control programs into the new millennium.
Non-biological “twinning” is yet another bizarre feature observed within MONARCH programming.
For instance, two young non related children would be ceremoniously initiated in a magical “soul-bonding” ritual so they might be “inseparably paired for eternity” (possibly another Mengele connection?). They essentially share two halves of the programmed information, making them interdependent upon one another.
Paranormal phenomenon such as astral projection, telepathy, ESP, etc. appear to be more pronounced between those who have undergone this process.
🦋Levels of MONARCH Programming🦋
ALPHA. Regarded as “general” or regular programming within the base control personality; characterized by extremely pronounced memory retention, along with substantially increased physical strength and visual acuity. Alpha programming is accomplished through deliberately subdividing the victims personality which, in essence, causes a left brain-right brain division, allowing for a programmed union of L and R through neuron pathway stimulation.
BETA. Referred to as “sexual” programming. This programming eliminates all learned moral convictions and stimulates the primitive sexual instinct, devoid of inhibitions. “Cat” alters may come out at this level.
DELTA. This is known as “killer” programming, originally developed for training special agents or elite soldiers (i.e. Delta Force, First Earth Battalion, Mossad, etc.) in covert operations. Optimal adrenal output and controlled aggression is evident. Subjects are devoid of fear; very systematic in carrying out their assignment. Self-destruct or suicide instructions are layered in at this level.
THETA considered to the “psychic” programming. Bloodliners (those coming from multi-generational Satanic families) were determined to exhibit a greater propensity for having telepathic abilities than did non-bloodliners. Due to its evident limitations, however, various forms of electronic mind control systems were developed and introduced, namely, bio-medical human telemetry devices (brain implants), directed-energy lasers using microwaves and/or electromagnetics. It is reported these are used in conjunction with highly-advanced computers and sophisticated satellite tracking systems.
OMEGA. A “self-destruct” form of programming, also known as “Code Green.” The corresponding behaviors include suicidal tendencies and/or self-mutilation. This program is generally activated when the victim/survivor begins therapy or interrogation and too much memory is being recovered.
GAMMA. Another form of system protection is through “deception” programming, which elicits misinformation and misdirection. This level is intertwined with demonology and tends to regenerate itself at a later time if inappropriately deactivated.
🦋Method and Components🦋
The initial process begins with creating dissociation within the subject, usually occurring from the time of birth to about six years.
This is primarily achieved through the use of electroshock (ECT) and is at times performed even when the child is in the mother’s womb.
Due to the severe trauma induced through ECT, sexual abuse and other methods, the mind splits off into alternate personalities from the core. Formerly referred to as Multiple Personality Disorder, it is presently recognized as Dissociative Identity Disorder and is the basis for MONARCH programming.
Further conditioning of the victim’s mind is enhanced through hypnotism, double-bind coercion, pleasure-pain reversals, food, water, sleep and sensory deprivation, along with various drugs which alter certain cerebral functions.
The next stage is to embed and compress detailed commands or messages within the specified alter.
This is achieved through the use of hi-tech headsets, in conjunction with computer-driven generators which emit inaudible sound waves or harmonics that affect the RNA covering of neuron pathways to the subconscious and unconscious mind.
“Virtual Reality” optical devices are sometimes used simultaneously with the harmonic generators projecting pulsating colored lights, subliminals and split-screen visuals. High voltage electroshock is then used for memory dissolution.
Programming is updated periodically and reinforced through visual, auditory and written mediums. Some of the first programming themes included the Wizard of Oz and Alice and Wonderland, both heavily saturated with occultic symbolism.
Many of the recent Disney movies and cartoons are used in a twofold manner:
desensitizing the majority of the population, using subliminals and neuro-linguistic programming deliberately constructing specific triggers and keys for base programming of highly-impressionable MONARCH children.
A prime example of how subliminal programming works is by looking at the recent Disney cinematic sensation Pocahontas, curiously billed as their “33rd” (highest degree in Scottish Rite Freemasonry) animated movie.
In the movie, Grandmother Willow is a mystical 400 year old tree who counsels the motherless Pocahontas to listen to her heart and help her realize all the answers lie within. Grandmother Willow is constantly talking in “double-speak” and using “reversals” (i.e. “Sometimes the right path is not the easiest one”; the esoteric derivative being: the left path [the path that leads to destruction] is the easiest one.
In Illuminati Structured MPD Systems, the willow tree represents the occultic powers of Druidism.
The intrinsic imagery of the tree’s branches, leaves and root systems are very significant, as some of the dark spiritual properties associated with the Willow Tree Programming are:
(1) The branches are used to whip victims in rituals for “cleansing” purposes (2) A willow tree can endure severe weather disturbances (i.e. storms) and is known for its liability or flexibility. Victims/Survivors of the programming describe the willow’s branches wrapping around them, with no hope of escape (3) The deep root system of the willow tree makes the victim/survivor feel as if they are falling deeper and deeper into an abyss while in a hypnotic trance. [12] Music plays an instrumental role in programming, through combinations of variable tones, rhythms and words.
Fright Meister Stephen King’s numerous novels and subsequent movies, are purported by credible sources to be used for such villainous purposes. One of his latest books, Insomnia, features a picture of King with the trigger phrase “WE NEVER SLEEP,” (indicative of someone with MPD/ DID) below an all-seeing eye.
A partial list of other mediums used to reinforce base programming are:
Pinocchio Fantasia Sleeping Beauty Snow White Beauty and the Beast Aladdin The Little Mermaid The Lion King E. T. Star Wars Ghostbusters Trancers II Batman Bewitched Fantasy Island Reboot Tiny Toons Ducktales The Dead Sea Scrolls The Tall Book of Make Believe
A few movies which depict or portray some aspect of MONARCH programming are Alice in Wonderland, Hellraiser 3, Raising Cain, Labyrinth, Telefon, Johnny Mnemonic, Point of No Return, The Lawnmower Man and Closet Land.
Other main programming themes are:
🐇Alice in Wonderland
🔮The Wizard of Oz🔮
🌅Hotel California
💫“When you wish upon a star”💫
🦋Programmers and Places🦋
It’s difficult to figure out who the original programmer of this satanic project was, due to the substantial amount of disinformation and cross-contamination propagated by the “powers that be.”
The two that went by the color-coded name of Dr. Green are a Jewish doctor named Dr. Gruenbaum, who supposedly collaborated with the Nazis during WWII, and Dr. Josef Mengele, whose trademark of cold blooded and calculating brutality has not only scarred the souls of survivors from Auschwitz, but also a countless number of victims throughout the world.
Mengele’s direct involvement at the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp was suspiciously downplayed during the Nuremberg Trials, and consequently no intensified effort by the U.S. and its allies was directed toward his capture.[13]
As a means to confuse serious investigators as to his whereabouts, U.S. officials would report Mengele being a non-threatening recluse in Paraguay or Brazil, or that he was simply dead (the “Angel of Death” miraculously must have come back to life at least five different times).
His unprecedented research, at the expense of thousands of lives, undoubtedly was a significant bonus to U.S. interests. Besides using the pseudonym of Dr. Green, survivors knew him as Vaterchen (daddy), Schoner Josef (beautiful Joseph), David and Fairchild. A gracefully handsome man of slight stature, Mengele would disarm people with his gentle demeanor, while at other times, he would explode into violent rages.[14]
Other characteristics remembered by survivors were the cadence of his shiny black boots as he paced back and forth and his “I-love-you/l-love-you-not” daisy game.
When he pulled off the last daisy petal, he would maliciously torture and kill a small child in front of the other child he was programming. Distraught survivors also recalled being thrown naked into cages with monkeys, who were trained to viciously abuse them. Evidently, Mengele enjoyed reducing people to the level of animals. He also would purposely restrain his victims from crying, screaming, or showing any excessive emotion.
Dr. D. Ewen Cameron, also known as Dr. White, was the former head of the Canadian, American and World Psychiatric Associations. Because of Cameron’s extensive experience and credentials, the ClA’s Allen Dulles funneled millions of dollars throughout organizations like the society for the Investigation of Human Ecology, which Cameron ruthlessly presided over.
Experimentations were conducted at several locations in Montreal, mostly at McGill University, St Mary’s Hospital and Allan Memorial Institute.
Besides the conventional methods of psychiatric tyranny, such as electroshock drug injections and lobotomies, Cameron conceived the technique of “psychic driving,” wherein unsuspecting patients were kept in a drug induced coma for several weeks and administered a regimen of electroshocks, while electronic helmets were strapped to their heads and repetitive auditory messages were transmitted at variable speeds.[15]
Many of those exploited were abused children which had been run through the Roman Catholic orphanage system.
Not surprisingly, Dr Cameron has been conveniently left out of most psychiatric journals. This may have been, in fact, largely due to Project MKULTRA being publicly exposed in 1970, through lawsuits filed by Canadian survivors and their families. The CIA and Canadian government settled out of court so as not to be required to officially admit to any wrongdoing.
A former U.S. Army Lt. Col. in the DIA’s psychological Warfare Division, Michael Aquino, is the latest in a line of alleged government-sponsored sadists. Aquino, an eccentric genius obsessed with Nazi pagan rituals, founded the Temple of Set, an offshoot of Anton LaVey’s Church of Satan. Aquino was connected with the Presidio Army Base day care scandal, in which he was accused of child molestation.
Much to the dismay of the young victims’ parents, all charges were dismissed. Code-named “Malcolm”, Aquino was reported to have developed training tapes on how to create a MONARCH slave and worked as a liaison between Government/Military Intelligence and various criminal organizations and occult groups in the distribution of MONARCH slaves.[16]
Heinrich Mueller was another important programmer who went under the code names “Dr. Blue” or “Gog.” He apparently has two sons who have carried on the trade. The original “Dr. Black” was apparently Leo Wheeler, the nephew of deceased General Earle G. Wheeler, who was the commander of the Joint Chiefs of Staffs during the Vietnam War.
Wheeler’s protégé, E. Hummel is active in the Northwest, along with W. Bowers (from the Rothschild bloodline).
Other alleged mastermind manipulators, past and present, are:
Dr. Sidney Gottlieb Lt. Col John Alexander Richard Dabney Anderson (USN) Dr. James Monroe Dr. John Lilly Lt. Comdr. Thomas Narut Dr William Jennings Bryan Dr. Bernard L. Diamond Dr. Martin T. Orne Dr. Louis J. West Dr Robert J. Lifton Dr. Harris Isbell Col. Wilson Green
In order to keep MKULTRA from being easily detected, the CIA segmented its subprojects into specialized fields of research and development at universities, prisons, private laboratories and hospitals. Of course, they were rewarded generously with government grants and miscellaneous funding.
The names and locations of some of the major institutions involved in MONARCH programming experimentation were/are:
Cornell Duke Princeton UCLA University of Rochester MIT Georgetown University Hospital Maimonides Medical Center St. Elizabeth’s Hospital (Washington D.C.) Bell Laboratories Stanford Research Institute Westinghouse Friendship Laboratories General Electric ARCO Mankind Research Unlimited
The “final product” was/is usually created on military installations and bases, where maximum security is required. Referred to as (re) programming centers or near-death trauma centers, the most heavily identified are:
China Lake Naval Weapons Center The Presidio Ft. Dietrick Ft. Campbell Ft. Lewis Ft. Hood Redstone Arsenal Offutt AFB Patrick AFB McClellan AFB MacDill AFB Kirtland AFB Nellis AFB Homestead AFB Grissom AFB Maxwell AFB Tinker AFB
Other places recognized as major programming sites are:
Langley Research Center Los Alamos National Laboratories Tavistock Institute areas in or by Mt. Shasta, CA, Lampe, MO and Las Vegas, NV, NYC, Montauk & other parts of Long Island
🦋Notable Names🦋
One of the first documented cases of a MONARCH secret agent was that of the voluptuous 1940’s model, Candy Jones. The book, The Control of Candy Jones, (Playboy Press) portrays her 12 years of intrigue and suspense as a spy for the CIA.
Jones, whose birth name is Jessica Wilcox, apparently fit the physiological profile as to be one of the initial experiments or human guinea pigs under the government’s “scientific” project, MKULTRA.
The most publicized case of MONARCH monomania has surfaced through the book TRANCE Formation of America: The True Life Story of a ClA Slave by Cathy O’Brien. On the back cover it emphatically states, “Cathy O’Brien is the only vocal and recovered survivor of the Central Intelligence Agency’s MKULTRA Project Monarch mind control operation” This documented autobiography contains compelling accounts of O’Brien’s years of unrelenting incest and eventual introduction into Project MONARCH by her perverted father.
Along with co-author Mark PhiIlips, her rescuer and deprogrammer, Cathy covers an almost unbelievable array of conspiratorial crime: forced prostitution (white slavery) with those in the upper echelons of world politics, covert assignments as a “drug mule” and courier, and the country-western music industry’s relationship with illegal CIA activities.
Paul Bonacci a courageous survivor who endured almost two decades of degradation under Project MONARCH, has disclosed strong corroborating evidence of wide scale crimes and corruption from the municipal/state level all the way up to the White House.[17]
He has testified about sexually-abused males selected from Boy’s Town in Nebraska and taken to nearby Offutt AFB, where he says they were subjected to intense MONARCH programming, directed mainly by Commander Bill Plemmons and former Lt. Col. Michael Aquino.[18]
After thoroughly tormenting the young boys into mindless oblivion, they were used (along with girls) for pornography and prostitution with several of the nation’s political and economic power brokers. Bonacci recalled being transported from the Air Force base via cargo planes to McClellan AFB in California. Along with other unfortunate adolescents and teenagers, he was driven to the elite retreat, Bohemian Grove.
The perpetrators took full advantage of these innocent victims, committing unthinkable perversions in order to satisfy their deviant lusts. Some victims were apparently murdered, further traumatizing already terrified and broken children.
An insatiable actress of marginal talent (now deceased), a morally-corrupt T.V. evangelist, a heralded former Green Beret officer and a popular country-western singer are a few others likely having succumbed to MONARCH madness.
Lee Harvey Oswald, Sirhan-Sirhan, Charlie Manson, John Hinckley Jr., Mark Chapman, David Koresh, Tim McVeigh and John Salvi are some notable names of infamy, strongly suspected of being pawns who were spawned by MKULTRA.
Deprogrammers and Exposers
Dr. Corydon Hammond, a Psychologist from the University of Utah, delivered a stunning lecture entitled “Hypnosis in MPD: Ritual Abuse” at the Fourth Annual Eastern Regional Conference on Abuse and Multiple Personality, June 25, 1992 in Alexandria, Virginia.
He essentially confirmed the suspicions of the attentive crowd of mental health professionals, wherein a certain percentage of their clients had undergone mind control programming in an intensively systematic manner.
Hammond alluded to the Nazi connection, military and CIA mind control research, Greek letter and color programming and specifically mentioned the Monarch Project in relation to a form of operative conditioning. Shortly after his groundbreaking speech, he received death threats. Not wanting to jeopardize the safety of his family, Dr. Hammond stopped disseminating any follow-up information.
Mark Phillips, a former electronics subcontractor for the Department of Defense, was privy to some of the top secret mind control activities perpetrated by the U.S. government.
His inquisitive demeanor, strong conscience and heart-felt concern for Cathy O’Brien, a “Presidential Model’ under Project MONARCH, prompted him to reveal the inner-workings of this grand deception beginning about 1991. As the story goes, he helped Ms. O’Brien escape from her captors and was able to deprogram her in about a years time in Alaska.
The controversial Phillips has his share of critics who are skeptical of the veracity of his claims.
New Orleans therapist Valerie Wolf introduced two of her patients before the President’s Committee on Human Radiation Experiments on March 15, 1995 in Washington D.C. The astonishing testimony made by these two brave women included accounts of German doctors, torture, drugs, electroshock, hypnosis and rape, besides being exposed to an undetermined amount of radiation. Both Wolf and her patients stated they recovered the memories of this CIA program without regression or hypnosis techniques.[19]
Wolf presently devotes much of her time to counseling such survivors.
A former labor attorney for Atlantic Richfield Co., David E. Rosenbaum, conducted a nine. year investigation (1983-1992) concerning allegations of physical torture and coercive conditioning of numerous employees at an ARCO plant in Monaca, PA.[20]
His clients, Jerry L. Dotey and Ann White, were victims of apparent radiation exposure; but as Mr. Rosenbaum probed deeper in the subsequent interview sessions, a “Pandora’s Box” was unveiled.
His most astonishing conclusion was that Jerry Dotey and Ann White were likely the off-spring of Adolf Hitler, based in part on the uncanny resemblance from photos (facial features; bone structure and size were taken into consideration).
Rosenbaum also states, “They both exhibit feelings and experiences that indicate they are twins.” Dotey and White were allegedly subjected to torture of many kinds while under drug induced hypnosis, with each one undergoing at least three training techniques by plant physicians.
Each victim was trained to enter into a hypnotic state upon the occurrence of specific stimuli, usually involving a “cue” word or phrase and trained to “remember to forget” what transpired in the hypnotic state. They were repeatedly subjected to identical stimulus-response sequence, to produce nearly automatic reactions to the particular status.
MKULTRA veteran, Dr. Bernard Diamond, Dr. Martin Orne and Dr. Josef Mengele regularly visited the ARCO plant, according to Rosenbaum. The special conditioning of Dotey and White was intended for the artificial creation of dual German personalities. Rosenbaum, who is Jewish, has maintained a deep friendship with the two, despite the seemingly precarious circumstances.
Other renowned therapists involved in deprogramming are Cynthia Byrtus, Pamela Monday, Steve Ogilvie, Bennett Braun, Jerry Mungadze and Colin Ross. Some Christian counselors have been able to eliminate parts of the programming with limited success.
Journalists who have recently expounded on the subject matter in exemplary fashion are Walter Bowart, Operation Mind Control, Jon Rappoport, U.S. Government Mind-Control Experiments on Children and Alex Constantine, Psychic Dictatorship In The USA.

List of Confirmed Conspiracies
Thanks to you all, many additions have been made since the time of this post below
Foreword:
You'll notice many are prefaced by the word, 'Project', typically by the CIA or other international intelligence agency. This may give you the idea that these are just 'typical operations' of our government. After all, "the world is always at war and you need spies". Or do you? Especially in a technocratic world where everyone can talk to everyone, around the world. I challange that assumption.
May I remind you that the definition of conspiracy is two or more operating in secret to cause harm. So when the CIA assassinates world leaders in secret, it does harm to them but not to US citizens because they are operating on our behalf. In this way, we justify their bad behavior. I want you to reevaluate the "causes harm" part behind their behavior. By deposing dictators and playing chess with the planet, have they really made us safer?

[U,O-media]
  • Continuity of Operations Plan : Intended as emergency plan, this status elevates the US intelligence community into extrajuditional operation, making it a 'shadow government' that has continued for 15(+) yrs since 9/11. Obama says, "the CIA gets what it wants". This operational modality is why. It makes the CIA "above the law." Bush renewed it twice, Obama renewed it twice. There is no evidence that there is a plan to deescalate the 'emergency state of 9/11' even 15 yrs later. Wikipedia has attempted to 'scrub the article of Obama' but failed because of us, here on /conspiracy. We are the Watchers on the Wall. [U,P,M,C]-[F,O,P]-[G]-[I]

ECHELON was confirmed by The Intercept in 2015 from Snowden revelations. Note that this was once in a conspiracy-gray-area of "covert protective operations of the CIA", until 9/11, after which the government started lying, manipulating the public and acting like an enemy of the global citizen; and taking actions that would appear counter to the interests of the american people (ie: "stopping terrorism by spreading violence and occupation around the world, begetting only more of the same"), leading 1 out of 4 of them to believe the government is the enemy. [U]-[P,I,G,O]
  • Enron and Arthur Anderson Scandal : massive-scale financial accounting fraud that stole money from millions of shareholders immediately after 9/11, leading to a class action that bankruped Enron. The fraud was facilitated by one of the largest auditing firms Arthur Anderson, also bankrupted. Arthur Anderson was found guilty of destroying documents, thereby voiding its business. Later AA managed to overturn this decision by the Supreme Court on a bogus technicality but no one would ever trust them again. The Enron/AA scandal has been linked to 9/11 by the records of the FBI's investigations of Enron's gold derivatives manipulation destroyed on the 23rd floor of the north tower. [F,P]-[U]

In 2012, Lord James has come to the following conclusions about Foundation X, "I think there may have been a massive piece of money laundering committed by a major government which ought to know better and that it has effectively undermined the integrity of the British bank the Royal Bank of Scotland, in doing so. The second alternative is that a major American department has an agency that has gone rogue on it because it has been wound up and has created a structure out of which they are seeking to get at least 50 billion Euros as a payoff. And the third possibility is that this is an extraordinarily elaborate fraud which has not been carried out but which has been prepared in order to provide a threat to one government or more if they don't pay them off. So there are three possibilities and this all needs a very urgent review." This whole affair was of course shut down--rather disrespectfully--in the US media as a conspiracy theory. and fairly compared to a nigerian email scam in the Guardian. [G,U,M,F]

But that work has been completed." Conspiracy theorists were right. But the subtext is they have something 'better'. [U]
  • The Informant named "Curveball" : Chemical engineer who defected from Iraq claimed they had weapons. This false testimony was used by the DIA to fool Americans into giving consent of the US military invasion of Iraq. And need I remind you the 'mockery' of the word 'curveball' in this particular context. [U, Germany]
